What is the Spirit of Tasmania?

The Spirit of Tasmania is a passenger and vehicle ferry service that you can take if you want to travel between Mainland Australia and the island state of Tasmania, whether for business or on holiday. The service is operated by TT-Line, an Australian company that is wholly owned by the Tasmanian Government. The ferry service itself started back in October of 2001 and has been running ever since.

Currently, the twin ships depart from Port Melbourne. These superfast ferries were originally built in Finland and are presently the only ones that are operating sailings between Tasmania and mainland Australia.

You might not know that the two vessels used to sail between Italy and Greece, but then received a paint job and overhaul at Neorion Ship Yard to become the Spirit of Tasmania I and II.

They provided a vital link for both tourists and locals alike and offers a convenient and affordable way for you to travel between the two states.

Travelling on the Spirit of Tasmania: About the Ship

It is a twin-hulled boat that was originally built in Finland. It’s 294 metres long and can accommodate up to 1,400 passengers and 500 vehicles.

There are two decks on the ship that you can explore, and each one has something different to offer. The Main Deck is where you’ll find the vehicle loading area as well as the self-service restaurant, cafe, bar, and duty-free store.

You’ll also find an outdoor seating area where you can relax and take in the stunning views of the Bass Strait. Make sure to breathe in the refreshing ocean breeze and imbibe the amazing scenery.

Travelling on the Spirit of Tasmania: Ticket Information

There are two types of tickets available for travel on the Spirit of Tasmania: passenger and vehicle tickets.

Passenger tickets

This type of ticket allows you to bring up to two pieces of luggage with you, which must not exceed 5kg or 115cm x 54cm x 38cm in size each.

If you want to bring more than two pieces of luggage with you, you will need to purchase an additional ticket for each extra piece.

Child tickets are available for children aged between four and 16 years old, and seniors aged 60 years and over are eligible for a discount on their ticket price.

Vehicle tickets

This type of ticket allows you to bring your own vehicle with you on the ferry and is perfect if you’re planning on road tripping around Tasmania.

You can bring either your own car or a motorcycle with you, and there is no limit on the amount of luggage that you can bring as long as it can all fit in your vehicle. Vans clearly have an advantage over cars here when it comes to hauling goods between Tasmania and Victoria.

If you want to bring a larger vehicle such as a campervan or caravan, you will need to purchase a ticket for each axle that your vehicle has.

It’s best to purchase your passenger or vehicle ticket before you arrive at the pier and board the ferry. These can be purchased online, through a travel agent, or at one of the Spirit of Tasmania’s booking offices.

To find out the cost of your ticket, you can use the fare calculator on the Spirit of Tasmania website.
